ARACHNID (R.I.P.)

The link below is just a tribute page to the band I used to be in. Since the band no longer exists, I thought at least there should be something to remember it.

Thanks a bunch =] 'gut growls' are...how am I gonna explain it, think of 'george fisher' type growls. You have to push more up from your diaphragm. Its my style too, I find that throat growls really fuck up my voice. Anyway, There's a good vid on youtube called 'george fisher talks about singing' or something like that where he explains 'gut growls,' maybe you'd like to see it. And I hate doing inhales, again with the throat-fuckiness xD anway, thanks again!

1. Throat growls.... From the gut? never heard of that but i don't exclude it exists. (i've only managed burping from the gut LOL) Exhales. Inhales produce a different sound and don't suit the style i used to produce much. Exhaling also feels more natural.
2. For long growls you just have to practice taking deep breaths i guess.

I also suggest much practice on your own besides the band. Grabbing a favourite album with lyrics in front of you and growling all of it would be a good exercise too hehe. When i started out Chaos A.D. by Sepultura was quite popular so i used to play it in my car and practice with it with people at traffic lights staring at me thinking i'm nuts LOL. I also used to practice with a couple of other Death Metal albums at the time. I also used to practice the band's tracks alone.

Good luck!! (and pls do not settle for what you achieve at any time... always believe you can do better. That was my belief until my last gig with ARACHNID. I'm saying this cos there are too many growlers who think they have got it but are still a long way away. I guess its not difficult to separate the real growlers from the ameteurs... even in malta.)

Helo edward, i'm a friend on one of your students, jean pierre cassar. I've been practising growling for a couple of years now and since you're obviously experienced i was wondering if I could ask you some questions

1) Do you do throat growls or do you bring them from your gut? And are they inhales or exhales?
2) How do you keep a single growl for long time periods? I can only hold one for a few seconds. Tips would be much appreciated, if that's ok with you =]

anyway thanks,
Ben

Hi Edward, thanks for the comment and congrats on your newborn son! Not getting much sleep over here with TWO but I can't explain how good it feels to think about taking them out to kick the soccer ball when they're older and maybe teach them how to play guitar and stuff!! It's very exciting. Take care dude!
