Formed as a five piece band in March 2004, Knockturn Alley started writing original music with the purpose of playing live shows and very soon enter the studio. In five months time the band were playing live shows, supporting bands like local hardcore acts Slit and Loathe and also UK based Scurge and Dark Veil.
March 2005 saw the departure of their guitar player and was soon replaced by Swedish guitarist Thomas Wahlin, bringing with him his home influences with bands like At The Gates, The Haunted, Soilwork and more. This made the band grow stronger and more focused on their aims. Within four months of practising with their latest addition to the line up, Knockturn Alley were again ready to hit the stage with a new track list that gathered faster beats, heavier riffs and melodic breakdowns.
In November 2005 the band were again to support a foreign act, this time it was French groovy death metal band Happy Face. Three shows in the line with the new line up and Knockturn Alley were again set for a short break, this time to focus on their debut EP, entitled The Dream Is Dead which was released in August 2006. The EP was recorded at Temple Studios Malta, and includes three tracks that showcase the bands effort so far. Planning to promote their recording and continue writing original songs, Knockturn Alley were also hoping to spread their name on foreign grounds.
Another line up move brought drummer Dimitris to Knockturn Alley. Dimitris joined the band in July 2007 after leaving his home country Greece, and moving to Malta a few weeks earlier. The drummer brought a new dimension to the band which was evident from the first live show since he had joined. A more aggressive Knockturn Alley, a tighter band as well as improved live performances were new characteristics that the drummer managed to introduce to the band.
Come 2008 and the band took the opportunity to play their first shows abroad. The band headlined 2 shows in Greece, one in Athens and another in Thessaloniki, supported by locals Karma Violens and The Source, among others.
The latest line up change brought James to the band in April 2008, with his first live appearance for Knockturn Alley just a month later. His progressive and technical influences were evident from the very first show and this proved to be the band’s new direction. With constant hard work and numerous gigs under their belt, the band are ready to record a debut album which is set to be released early 2009; a collection of tracks which will surely reflect the band’s new sound and mature song writing.
